Handmade Halloween décor in South Africa costs from R59 for a gothic skull rose to R249 for a skull candle, and on The Holiday Village you can buy wooden signs, ceramic pumpkins, wall art and bat earrings straight from the stalls that make them. Most pieces are one of a kind — one in stock — so this guide lists what’s available now, by price and by where it goes. It’s part of our guide to handmade gifts from South African creators.
Why does Halloween décor work differently in South Africa?
Because the party starts in daylight. On 31 October the sun sets at around 18:15 in Durban, 18:25 in Johannesburg and 19:15 in Cape Town (you can check your town on timeanddate). Children’s parties and street trick-or-treating mostly happen before dark, on a warm late-spring afternoon, often on the stoep or at the front gate.
That changes what earns a place. In the northern hemisphere, Halloween décor is built around dark evenings and candlelight. Here, a piece has to look good at four in the afternoon, in full sun, before a single light goes on. Painted wood, ceramic and bold silhouettes do that well. Flickering-light effects only get their moment at the end of the evening.
Our expert-lens rule after five Halloween seasons: in South Africa, style for 4pm first and 8pm second.
Handmade Halloween décor under R100
The small pieces that make a table or a door look finished. Handmade by Pat makes the “Bottoms Up” Witch Legs Cauldron Sign in purple (R99.99): bold purple witch legs sticking out of a black cauldron, on wood, with glitter accents, and made to hang indoors or out. The Rustic Pumpkin Hanging Sign in orange (R99) has a distressed wood finish that suits a front door. For the table, Hattie the Pumpkin (R89.71) is a petite ceramic pumpkin wearing a witch’s hat.
From Me2 Creations, the Black Rose with Skull (R59) is a fabric rose with a skull at its centre — one stem in a bottle makes a gothic centrepiece — and the wooden bead garland with pumpkin accent (R99) drapes over a shelf, a tiered tray or a drinks trolley.

Statement pieces for a wall, a mantel or a front entrance. Handmade by Pat’s “Skelly” framed wall art (R199) shows a lounging skeleton with the line “Waiting for my wife to finish shopping” — the piece every guest stops to read. The Broom Picture (R219) is a wooden wall piece with a witches-take-flight-at-midnight theme, and the Rustic Pumpkin Hanging Sign in black (R199) is the moodier version of the orange sign. The Gothic Blaze skull candle (R249) is the piece for after dark.
Me2 Creations’ Purple Spider Frame (R105) is a wooden wall hanging adorned with spiders, spooky without being scary, so it works in a child’s room or a family entrance.
And for the person who’d rather wear Halloween than hang it, Pretty Little Things in Centurion makes Batty for You earrings to order (R110): black bat dangles in lightweight polymer clay on gold-tone hooks. It fits the stall’s own description of what it does: “We love creating pieces that make people smile.” There’s more handmade jewellery in our guide to handmade jewellery gifts by budget.
Where should each piece go?
Front door, gate and stoep
Hanging signs are the first thing trick-or-treaters see, and they’re readable in full sun. Hang the Witch Legs sign (R99.99) or a Rustic Pumpkin sign (R99 or R199) at eye height for a child, roughly 1–1.2m, rather than at adult height. Bring wood pieces inside overnight if a late-spring storm is forecast.
Party table and drinks
Group small pieces in threes: Hattie the Pumpkin, a Black Rose with Skull in a bottle, and the bead garland running along the table. Three pieces under R100 each give you a styled table for under R250.
Walls and mantel
One framed piece is enough. The Skelly art (R199) is funny; the Broom Picture (R219) is witchy; the Purple Spider Frame (R105) is the family-friendly option.
After dark
If you light the Gothic Blaze candle, keep it well away from fabric roses, garlands and paper décor. The US National Fire Protection Association’s Halloween fire safety guidance recommends keeping decorations away from open flames and using flameless candles in jack-o’-lanterns and anywhere children or costumes brush past.
When should you order Halloween décor to arrive by 31 October?
Order by mid-October. Each creator on The Holiday Village packs and ships their own work, so a signs-and-earrings order arrives as separate parcels, and made-to-order pieces like Batty for You show the maker’s turnaround before you pay. Ordering by around 15 October leaves room for courier time and for the piece you wanted to still be there — most of these are one of a kind.

Why shop Halloween on The Holiday Village?
The Holiday Village was started by The Holiday Shop, the KwaZulu-Natal seasonal décor studio founded in 2021. We’ve styled five South African Halloweens and learned that the pieces people keep year after year are the made ones: the sign with character, the ceramic pumpkin that comes out of the box every October. The Village gives those pieces a home under the names of the stalls that make them, with every product marked ready to ship or made to order, and delivery straight from the maker.
Halloween in South Africa has taught me not to copy the dark, candlelit look exactly as we see it overseas. Our celebrations often begin in bright afternoon light, move into warm evenings and have to survive an open door or a bit of wind. The best styling here has a little drama, but still feels at home in our summer-ish October.
